Hints On Choosing The Style And Pattern For Your Space
Most of us get overwhelmed when we try to figure out the right style, pattern or colors for our living spaces. Remember to use the same design concepts you have learned when putting together an outfit you are wearing to a luncheon or a business meeting, as they are the same. If you love yellow in your clothing, you are probably going to want to bring it into your living spaces
If you have a very large room and are intending to make it look smaller, then choose patterns with darker colors. Dark colors tend to make spaces look smaller. This rationale is true in fashion as well, for those of us who are more Rebenesque than Victoria Secret model may wear navy and black dresses. It minimizes our proportions.
Large patterns also make large rooms feel more intimate. Floral or repeated patterns can hide imperfections on the wall or can be used to highlight smaller areas.
Light colors make rooms look larger and can create a sense of warmth. They are great as an accent to hanging art, sculptures, etc. Small patterns also increase the sense of space in a room. You can also use stripes in interior design as you would with fashion – if you want to have a wall look taller, use vertical stripes. If you have a small room, you can give a sense of greater length by using horizontal stripes.
Since there are no absolutes that govern the success of your outfit or design of interior spaces, here are a few other thoughts that may be of assistance in pulling together your look.
Your choices must have commonality in color, pattern or motif. This does not mean that you must use the pineapple motif in everything you do in the space, but you may use a color from the motif in a stripe. If the pineapple motif is large, than use it once as an accent and use more subtler, smaller patterns to complement. Here are a couple of pictures from Pottery Barn's latest. There are stripes and florals, large prints and small prints, solids and stripes. These are all the elements you need when looking for the right paper to go with the bedspread, draperies or upholstery in your space.
I recommend to my clients that they take the time to look in magazines. Clip out what they love and what they hate. Note what you like about the picture and notice what drives you crazy. This helps in you to begin to refine your palette for your space.
